First Time For Everything [Ilana/Kaitlin]

[USS Phoenix - Sickbay]

The medical bay on the Phoenix was quiet for once, but that was just as well since it meant that the medical personnel could finally get the inventory done. The shipment of medications and necessities needed had come in a couple of days ago when they had stopped to resupply at Starbase Athena.

Ilana scratched at a loose scale that was in the process of shedding as she looked at the box of hyposprays in front of her, checking it off against the list of what they were supposed to have received. Her attention was diverted, however, by the sound of the door opening behind her. Turning around, the Cardassian spotted a young human stepping into sickbay. She put on a small smile, working to overcome her shy nature.

"H-h-hello, h-how c-can I help y-y-you?"

Kaitlin creeped into the sickbay, probably about as nervous, maybe more than Ilana. "H-hello, I... I am uh... I am Kaitlin, Kaitlin Dexter. I'm here for my uh.. Checkup." Kaitlin entered the sickbay slowly walking towards Ilana then offering a hand.

Since it was Kaitlins first day, she had come for a checkup. She also wanted to make some friends, she didn't want to be on a ship all lonely. The sickbay was one of the first places she had been on the Phoenix and she looked forward to meeting people, even though she was probably one of the most nervous people on the ship.

For a moment, Ilana thought she might have found a kindred spirit in Kaitlin as she heard a brief moment of stammering, but it soon became apparent that, unlike the Cardassian's permanent speech impediment, the young Human's was a result of nerves. Then again, nerves were something that Ilana could relate to with significant ease.

Taking Kaitlin's hand and shaking it, Ilana maintained her smile. "Ih-Ih-Ilana T-T-Telak," she replied before going on to say: "N-n-n-new t-t-transfer? Th-th-this m-m-must b-b-be a f-f-first. N-n-n-normally, w-w-we h-have t-t-to ch-ch-chase after p-p-people f-f-for th-th-their ph-physicals."

"Well I decided to be a good girl and come to my physical!" Kaitlin uncontrollably giggled then realised how unprofessional she was. "Oh I'm sorry about that, it was unprofessional of me." Kaitlin couldn't help but feel embarrassed of what she just did.

Th-th-that only h-h-happens wh-when th-th-the c-c-command officers d-decide t-t-to d-d-drop in." She gestured toward an empty biobed. "Wh-why d-d-don't y-you t-take a s-seat wh-wh-while I g-get a t-t-tricorder?"

Once she had located her favourite tricorder, (it was usually best not to ask why some medical staff had a favourite tricorder), which had been buried under a pile of blankets someone had been in the process of folding, she returned to her patient.

"W-w-we d-don't h-h-have y-y-your r-r-records y-yet. Anything I sh-sh-should kn-kn-know b-b-before I g-g-get s-s-started?"

"Instead from the fact that I'm completely new on the ship there's nothing." Kaitlin took a seat on the end of the bed. "So what does the ship look like? This is my first stop on the ship." Kaitlin was excited to see the rest of the ship, maybe a bit too excited, 'Just stay cool' went through her mind repeatedly.

Nodding once, Ilana flicked open the tricorder and started to scan the young woman, recording the data in a temporary file that she could add to the full records once Starfleet Medical sent them through to the ship.

"I c-c-couldn't r-r-really s-say," she admitted a little shyly.  "I h-h-haven't s-s-seen m-m-much of th-the sh-sh-ship b-b-beyond s-s-sickbay and m-m-my qu-qu-quarters."  Realising that she had made it sound like she was confined to those areas, she quickly added: "I m-m-mean, I d-d-don't t-t-tend t-to g-g-go out m-m-much b-between d-duty sh-shifts."

"Do you not speak to people?" Kaitlin thought that it sounded as though Ilana didn't get any company on the ship. "Surely you must have some friends you go and talk to!" Kaitlin knew what it was like to be like that especially since she had been in the same boat when she was younger.

"This is my first posting!" Kaitlin thought to when she was back at the academy. "I only had a few friends back at the academy, I decided that I should focus on getting a job and then make friends when I got my first post, and my first post is here, on the Phoenix!"

Kaitlin thought back to when she was secluded, in the middle of nowhere with her 'real' parents. "I used to have no friends because we lived away from civilisation, I'm glad I met people because it's a lot better then being alone."

It was obvious to the Cardassian that this new member of their crew was keen and eager to start her service. Ilana couldn't remember ever having been like that, not as open about it. She had been excited, yes, but in a far more... reserved fashion. After all, her first posting had been as a cadet, out in the far reaches of space, learning mostly from the station's EMH program.

"M-m-most p-people p-p-prefer n-n-not t-to s-s-socialise w-with m-me," she admitted quietly. That had been something she learned very quickly while studying at the Starfleet Medical Academy, although she couldn't really blame them. Instead of elaborating on that point, she chose to change the subject.

"Y-y-you've c-c-come t-to an interesting sh-ship f-f-for y-your f-f-first p-posting. Y-y-you'll g-get a l-lot of experience h-here."

Ilana flipped her tricorder closed with a reassuring smile. "S-s-some of th-the c-c-crew c-can b-b-be a l-l-little t-t-touchy. W-w-watch out f-for Ensign A-Alpha especially, sh-sh-she c-can b-b-be v-very... abrupt." Moving on from that, she nodded to Kaitlin. "Y-y-you h-have a c-c-clean b-bill of h-health f-f-from m-me."

Kaitlin let out a breath of relief. "I'm glad to know there is nothing wrong with me! Ensign alpha... Is she some sort of android?" Kaitlin was curios to know what she was looking forward too, was it good, was it bad? She didn't know but she was still filled with excitement.

She was rude enough without knowing that there were people talking about her behind her back. "As f-f-far as anyone kn-knows, sh-sh-she is h-h-human, b-b-but y-y-you'll q-question th-that wh-wh-when y-you s-see h-h-her."

Ilana was quiet for a moment as she ran through the ship's rosters in her rather excellent memory, thinking of the various species that served on the Phoenix. Many had said that the ship seemed to be a meeting point or dumping ground for the various individuals who had a hard time fitting in on other ships.

"Th-th-there are l-l-lots. S-s-several R-R-Romulans, C-C-Cardassians, obviously, T-T-Trill, Andorian, and I b-b-believe th-th-that a B-B-Breen and a V-V-Vorta j-j-j-just j-j-joined the c-crew."

"Sounds like it'll be a great crew! I look forward to meeting them all! Obviously you are a fine part of the selection of species too!" Ilana was right, the ship was quite extraordinary and Kaitlin had only seen the roster and sick bay.

Ilana smiled back at the young woman. She was growing to like Kaitlin. She was open and friendly, enthusiastic about her new life. Raynor would be pleased that she actually had another friend.

"The captain will most likely be my next stop, she has a family hmm? Is she married to someone on the ship, or not?" Kaitlin liked habing company on a ship, it can get lonely when your floating through space, with no one to talk to, no one to get advice and guidance from, and on some cases, no one to love.

People needed other people to rely on and so someone can rely on themselves, it's what kept people sane and when your on a ship in the middle of space, it made things even worse.

"Awww, I love children!" Kaitlin's face lit up when she heard about the kids, the ship so far was sounding amazing! Lots of different species. "I have a brother who stayed back with my carers, he's working towards becoming a counsellor, I really do hope he passes!"

Ilana gave a slightly wry smile at that. "I w-w-wouldn't l-let h-h-her h-hear y-y-you s-s-say th-that," she warned teasingly. "Y-y-you m-might f-f-find y-yourself on b-b-babysitting d-duty!" That was generally the threat from Archangel, putting misbehaving personnel on babysitting duty, looking after the two girls and handful of other children that resided aboard the ship. While it may not seem like too much of a hardship, the ship's children could be rather unruly.

"Sounds like fun instead of a chore!" 'Or is that because I'm young?' Kaitlin questioned herself then dismissed her thoughts. "I'm sure it'll be hard work but it'll still be fun!" Kaitlin loved looking after children, it was one of the things she did when she was younger.

As if she knew that she was being talked about, a little girl wandered in to sickbay, a plush Sehlat trailing behind her with its paw clutched in her hand. It was obvious that the five-year-old was at least part Romulan, given the brow ridges and pointed ears, but the black hair hadn't been cut short in the traditional manner, but pulled back in a long plait with a blue ribbon woven through it to match the child's bright blue eyes.

She skipped over to where Ilana and Kaitlin were, grinning up at the two.

"Hello! Are you new? I haven't seen you before!"
