[Bridge]

With the forecasted requirements of the mission on which they had been assigned, Alex had been sent to coordinate with the labs regarding transport and quarantine procedures. Having completed his physical equipment checks on the field generators, he could have stayed below and autotuned the cycles together in the labs, but he was itching to get out of the windowless rooms. He missed seeing the stars as part of his job. The rank he didn't care about. Less responsibility and less worry was fine with him. Standing in a transporter room all shift, however, was slowly killing him.

That was one of the reasons why he had decided to come onto the bridge. Asides from being able to coordinate the transporters from the free auxiliary Ops station, it gave him an excuse to 'breath the air' again. Logging onto the console he accessed the transporter parameters. Normally, the computer would automatically detect any substances it recognized as hazardous, and scrub them from the datastream microseconds before materialization. If they had left the settings as per standard, any samples sent up from the surface would be rendered useless. By saving the different guidelines ahead of time, Alex would be able to switch to a decontamination cycle for the returning away team much more quickly.

Finishing one algorithm, he let out a short sigh, taking a breather to watch the planet slowly revolve below them on the viewscreen. One of these days...

Matthew sighed as he began to shuffle around in his small bag for both his tricoder and his glasses. First he pulled out his glasses putting them on, he hated warring them. Just didn't like the way they looked; despite other people thinking quite the opposite. But they did completely correct his vision and made reading the tricoder (amongst other things) much easier to read. Then within seconds he pulled out his tricoder and began quickly scanning the area.

Thus, he began a survey of the equipment, and started taking the notes of what was immediately needed versus those items that could wait a moment.  "Ensign Es'starla and Ensign Gelder, see whittles they need to replace that you believe is an urgent priority, and then together we will go over it before I submit it to Commander Arthur for requisition," Andrew added to the two officers nearby.

*Van* Gelder, Gavin thought, quirking an eyebrow at Sheridan. It was funny...the family name had seemed like an albatross for generations, but it still irritated him when someone said it wrong. Go figure, he thought, smiling at Es'Starla. The Orion girl had looked a bit swoony, but had recovered. There was a certain...smell...to the area. That, and all of the symptoms that Mills had listed...

"This honestly sounds like a biological agent to me," Gavin said to A'Della. "I mean, if I had to just throw something against the wall, it smacks of protozoan parasitic infection." Gavin shrugged, going back to checking off the list of coagulant chemicals that would need to be replenished.

A'Della nodded. "Agreed Doctor Van Gelder; I recommend that all away team members use their re-breathers on their belts and that we change out the generator rebreathers for our atmosphere every thirty minutes, seeing as how this is airborne, we do not need to take back something to the ship that is foreign to our decontaminate process, therefore; infecting the entire crew accompaniment." A'Della hit send on her PaDD to alert everyone in the Away Team the scope of contaminants in the air and water. Sciences could study it further and Environmental Specialists could create devices that would help Niles and his people.

[Shuttlebay 2]

With the first away team on the surface already and gathering information, Derek had drawn the easier straw, waiting on a preliminary report to come back up for him to go on a supply run. The type-6 shuttle was already prepped, cargo nets slung for equipment that the deck crew expected would be requisitioned. All he had to do now was sip on a mug while watching several Ops and Science crewman erect decontamination screens for when the shuttles returned later on.

Checking his pre-flight PADD for any updates, Derek wasn't surprised to note that his vacant co-pilot slot had been filled, although he was curious as to why it had been delegated to Pardek. It made him wonder why a humanitarian mission required security officers in the first place, although he reckoned the supplies they might be asked to ferry down could prove a tempting target. For a brief moment, he considered sending Pardek a comm to ask her location, but since they had yet to receive any supply request, Derek took another sip of coffee, deciding there was no rush.

"Oh my!" Mills said, taken somewhat aback by all the intense security procedures. He knew the water itself was bad, but it sounded like this team was preparing for a full-on hazardous materials procedure. Then again, they were Starfleet. People who worked in space that weren't careful often ended up dead. "Do you all really think it's gotten this bad?"

Mills ran a hand through his brown hair, shaking his head. "My God. If it's as bad as all this, we might have to evacuate the whole thing!"

Archangel groaned at the opinions and conclusions coming from the away team. If the contaminant was airborne, that meant that they had all been infected which, in turn, meant that they couldn't return to the ship until they had determined a way of screening it out with the transporters or curing it on the ground and returning in the shuttle.

With a sigh, she tapped her commbadge. "T'Koris to Phoenix. Turns out that the contaminant down here is airborne, so don't expect us back for a while," she said before closing the channel and looking to the team. "If the tricorders aren't giving you the answers you need, seal up a sample in a container and tell the labs to set up a lab to receive it." She then turned her attention to the Administrator. "Do you know where the water source for this section is?"

Andrew noted the effectiveness with which the crew performed, but this did not surprise him.  After all, they...for the most part...were excellent in their various fields.  Ensign Van Gelder's and Es'starla's analysis seemed to indicate possible foul play at work, and the recommendation for breathers was not a bad idea.  The Administrator was now thinking of evacuating, but that seemed a tad premature.

"Perhaps we should continue our investigation before we start talking about evacuation.  I do have a question, though.  Is this the only part of the colony, or have you recently expanded to any other areas?" Andrew said professionally to Administrator Mills.  He was being mindful of the Captain's hopes of the mission not being one of actual trouble with others.

Of course, hoping did not make it so....

With his list completed, Andrew sent it to Ensign Van Gelder's PADD for the young Science officer to look over before it was sent to Commander Arthur.

*New Sensor Calibration System
*New Bio Filter System
*Upgraded LCARS
*Upgraded Federation Science and Medical Database
*Federation Colonial Sensor Grid Upgrade
*New Federation Subspace Relay Unit

At the bottom of the list was the following comment:

'If you see anything I have missed in the list...feel free to add to it.'  ~Lieutenant J.G. Sheridan

When the Captain asked about the water source; Andrew nodded...though the question was not aimed at him.

"Captain, according to the layout, the water source comes from up in the mountains. I have it marked on my PADD, and can send you the location," Andrew offered.

Mills looked from the captain to the gold-shirt, and back again.  He was just glad to have something to do that he knew he was capable of.  These Starfleet types always had a way of making someone feel inadequate...even if they didn't mean to do it.

"Yes, right, the river comes from the mountain.  Not but a few handfuls of kilos off to the northwest.  That's the visible source that we took on the initial surveys...but it comes out from under the ground."  He glanced around at the assembled crew.  "I can have my people load up some skiff speeders, if you'd like to go."

On his way to the ready room, Gabriel turned around as a call came in from the surface. Airborne contaminants? He certainly didn't like the sound of that...not a damn bit. "Acknowledged, Captain," he said. "And...be careful. Phoenix out."

He glanced down at his padd, scanning the requisitions sent by the away team.

"And a partridge in a pear tree..." he muttered, grinning. Whatever shape this colony was in, it sure as hell was going to be better off than before they came. Without further delay, he forwarded the information to Engineering and Operations, setting it to Priority One.

So, they had the location of the source of the water that fed into the processing station. If they couldn't scrounge many answers here, then that was the next logical place to look, wasn't it?

"Sounds like a plan," Archangel agreed, looking at the group gathered there. "If you can have the speeders take us the length of the river toward the source? If the origin of the contaminant is along the river rather than at the source, we should be able to spot it.

Henriks began to pull up information on his padd when it buzzed, indicating that Ensign A'Della had sent him something. Not good, Henriks thought, not good at all. If it was airborne as well as waterborne, then this thing was going to be a lot harder to track. Air was a lot more unpredictable. Turning to Mills, Henriks asked, "Can you tell us how severe the cases of infection are for your people?"

[Shuttlebay 2]

Standing up straight as the bay doors opened to let in a flurry of cargo totting technicians, Derek strode towards his shuttle. A manifest had appeared on his PADD, and he checked over several of the large containers as they were loaded into the back. Most were components of a biofilter upgrade for the colony below, although two smaller containers held data storage modules.

Turning to receive a sealed case, Derek grimaced while reading the label. "Rebreathers?" He asked the science crewman who had dropped them off. "For the away team below. You'll need one for this trip as well, unless you want to spend some time in quarantine. Just got word that the contaminants on the surface might be airborne."

"Just swell..." Derek muttered to himself, passing the case off to be placed inside. Stepping off to the side of the bay where two storage lockers stood, he opened one up to examine the assortment of equipment belts hung inside with displeasure. Rebreathers always made him feel, ironically, mildly out of breath. Drawing out a belt, he slung it over his shoulder before tapping on his commbadge. =/\="Chief Black to Ensign Pardek. Ma'am, we're about ready to set off from Shuttlebay 2."=/\=

The request had come up through the grapevine, and several of the items had already been crossed off the list along the way. The Filter system, LCARS, Medical Database and Calibration software were already being loaded onto a shuttlecraft. The sensor grid upgrade and subspace relay however had parts which were much too large for a shuttlecraft and would need to be transported down directly from their cargo bays.

Finishing up his transporter calibrations, Alex sent the required modifications to the science labs delegated to study whatever was ailing the inhabitants below before turning his attention towards his 'to-do' list.

Yep, that sounds out-and-out terrible, Gavin thought, looking around at the gathered party.  "I think that a vaccine would be simple enough to manufacture, once we find out exactly what the cause of all this is."

Even though Gavin was no longer a medical officer, and had abandoned any hope of becoming an MD in order to protect his cousin, Zero, he still had most of his background and training in that field.  That side of him wanted to start developing a vac right away, but his scientific nature wanted to get to the root cause of the problem.  "I would recommend that we investigate the river, first," he said, glancing at the captain for guidance.

"Of course, doctor," Mills nodded.  "The more specifics have been cataloged for you on your padd data, but, in short...your basic gastrointestinal distrubance.  Cramps, sickness, and the like.  Two of our workers had to be sent with Ferengi traders to be placed at the nearest starbase, since their small intestines stopped absorbing nutrients.  Those are the worst cases, however.  So far it's been a hell of an annoyance, but not deadly, thank the Great Bird."

He glanced at Captain T'Koris, smiling.  "I'll get some speeders here, right away," he said, speaking into a wrist-comm, calling for three of the vehicles to meet them at the Processing plant.  "They'll be here in minutes.  Shall we go?"

Somehow, Archangel was wondering if a combat situation wouldn't have been a far simpler situation to deal with. However, as a Starfleet officer, she was aware that combat wasn't their primary role and wouldn't wish it to be, not this soon after the Dominion War.

Seeing the land vehicles approaching rapidly, she looked to the away team. "Ok, investigate the river and its source. With any luck, we'll find whatever's at the root of this problem."

Andrew looked from the team to the Captain, and then to the aged equipment needing to be replaced so badly. He had placed his breather on the moment the warning of the problem being airborne had been given. Now, as much as he wanted to go with the rest of the team to discover the root of the troubles; Andrew realized that would be quite irresponsible of him.

"Captain, I will stay here to make sure this equipment gets taken care of, and further act as your guard. Ensign Thompson will need to protect the team on their way to the site. Between your engineering expertise, and my aid as an Ops officer...we can make sure the new equipment and upgrades get installed correctly for the colony. What do you think, Ma'am?" Andrew Sheridan suggested to his CO.

Archangel considered Lieutenant Sheridan's proposal for a moment. It did make more sense for the science officers to go off on their own to investigate the river's source. She couldn't fault the logic on that one. The one sticking point at the forefront of her mind was that, as captain, whenever she beamed off rhe ship, she had to have a security detail with her at all times. Sending Ensign Thompson with the science detatchement seemed to be in violation of that regulation. Then again, the regulation didn't specify explicitely that the detail had to be from the security department. And it did mean that she got to tackle an engineering program again.

"Good suggestion, Lieutenant. We'll go with that. Keep an open commlink though, I want to know what's happening up there."

"Recommend caution as the guide, we do not have the parameters for the beginning of this contamination, nor do we fully understand it's mechanics, it could do harm to some of our crew without our even knowing, until they were infected. We have no blue print on this and how it affects Extra -Terrestrials like ourselves." A'Della threw in the Doctor word of caution. Thinking, ~Of course we have to investigate, but it should be with EVAC suits, gear that protects life. ~ She remembered a mission on a deep dark world, where the Away Team leader lost all of the members except for himself and a younger A'Della, fresh out of Academy. Her deep pools of lavender eyes and the Vulkhunsu logic prompting caution as the logical course.

Andrew nodded to his Captain with a slight smile.

"Of course, Captain." Some of the supplies would start to arrive soon, and then he could begin coordinating with the colonist engineers on getting the equipment installed for the betterment of their homes. No doubt Mr. Wu and Mr. Black were coordinating on getting the items to them as quickly as they could. They were good at their jobs according to their profiles, and he could almost visualize them doing the things that needed to be done to accomplish their tasks.

They young Ops officer checked his sidearm briefly to ensure it was set to heavy stun before taking over as his CO's protector while waiting for the requested equipment.

"Ensign Thompson, make sure they are well protected. The survival of the colony depends on them," Andrew instructed the young Security officer with a nod towards the Science and Medical members of the staff preparing to leave.

No sooner had he given the order; Andrew began checking surveying from his guard position of the Captain the room for threats to his superior. Other than antiquated equipment and the bio hazard...there were none at the present.

Matthew offered a sligh salute to signify that he understood as he walked towards the science team. His eyes had become a slightly more dulled shade of blue.

A'Della, continued her scans, and she also took deeper water samples, cataloguing them for process. This was a contamination problem that was similar to one on a mission past, where she was a Intern on the Away Mission, on Dulles Planet, a agricultural planet whose main source of income and trade was Farming.

~Dulles had been hit by Planetary destroyers from a enemy known as the Dulordsan, a Warrior like people, who seeded bacteria and other plagues into a world, something that did not bother the Dulordsan, but made the natives very ill and soon they died off, leaving the planet for the Dulordsans to inhabit. ~ A'Della, thought about that deadly mission, all the children dead, all the adults for the most part wiped out, because the Dulordsans wanted their planet.

She sent the current data from her samples to all of the Away Team members PaDD's.

Gav's eyebrows raised quite a bit as he read over Es'Starla's report. Could they very well be walking into a damn war zone? If there was something like that going on, it would be a shadow war, but...he was suddenly very glad that Captain T'Koris was sending the cavalry along with them, though a part of him felt bad about leaving her unprotected. Thelos was quite fond of the Romulan, and Gavin had found her to be a fair, but tough, leader, worthy of respect.

"I guess it's pretty important we find out what the hell's going on...and quickly, at that," he said, following the other officers out with Mills.
